JUNIOR HIGH
The junior high program at High Point continues the strong academic emphasis of the lower grades with the students receiving instruction in basic academic subjects, physical education, and a varied enrichment program. There is a departmentalized program with the students attending seven classes each day. These years are a time of enormous development for these young people who need to be treated with respect and concern. The High Point junior high offers a safe and comfortable transition to high school, providing a strong academic program, a distinct uniform, and a variety or social, athletic, and extracurricular activities in which the students may participate.

English
The English classes at High Point Academy present a strong academic program to the students. The literature course is based on the classics, with additional units covering modern authors, short stories, drama, and poetry. The students develop skills in literary analysis and writing. Basic fundamental grammar is emphasized in both the seventh and eighth grades.
Mathematics
Three different levels of mathematics are offered at High Point in recognition of the different rates at which students grasp the subject matter. At the end of the sixth grade year students take a mathematics placement exam. Those results are combined with ERB scores and sixth grade teacher recommendations to place students in either pre-algebra or Algebra 1 as seventh grade students. Those who take pre-algebra will then take Algebra 1 as eighth graders, while those who take Algebra 1, will advance to geometry. Both the algebra and the geometry courses are equivalent in content to those offered at the high school level.
History
World History is taught in grade seven. The course begins with a study of the Greeks and Romans, continues with the Middle Ages, and carries through to modern times.
In grade eight, United States History is taught. The curriculum begins with the American colonies and continues through to the present time. Emphasis is placed on a study of the United States Constitution and the United States Presidents.
Science
Seventh grade science covers the topics of biological science. The eighth grade program is geared toward the study of physical science which includes chemistry and physics.
Spanish
The Spanish curriculum consists of a two-year program that should enable the student to enter a Spanish 2 class in the ninth grade. The students learn basic vocabulary, regular and irregular verbs, and idiomatic expressions. There is extensive oral practice in class that is reinforced with written homework.
French
The emphasis of the French program is on written and oral communication. Classes are conducted in French with students writing, speaking, and reading in the target language. A variety of supplemental materials ties language acquisition to the other academic disciplines and enhances the appreciation of the French culture.
Enrichment
In addition to the academic classes listed above, the junior high has a strong enrichment program which offers the following classes: computers, yearbook production, art, speech, cultural awareness, and health.
Physical Education
High Point’s physical education program focuses on daily exercise and a wide variety of sports. Rules, fundamentals, strategy, and squad competition are incorporated into the sports units. Fitness testing, with aerobic as well as anaerobic tests, is also included.
After-School Sports
Competitive team sports are offered in the after-school sports program. The students play on teams against other area independent schools. The girls compete in volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, golf, and track. The boys compete in football, soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, golf, and track.
